About Melody and the running camps
Melody Fairchild was a running phenomenon in her youth and became a household name. She is regarded as one of the greatest female high school distance runners in the history of the United States, having been the first high school girl to break 10 minutes for 2 miles. Melody was also recognised as the best athlete in Colorado in her senior year, winning an award from Denver Athletic Club. Nearly 17 years after the end of her prep career, she still holds several Colorado state records. She won 2 National Cross Country titles, six State titles and won the Bolder Boulder citizens race 3 times. As a senior in High School, her quickest Bolder Boulder citizens race winning time would have placed her second in the Women’s elite race the same day. In her senior year she had 80 schools asking her to race for them.
Melody’s senior career hit many highs, winning the NCAA 3,000 meters title, qualifying for the 1997 World Championships in the 5,000 meters, and the Olympic Trials in 1996 and 2000. Since her professional career ended, Melody has been coaching and successfully encouraging other runners to achieve their potential. In 2007 Melody created her first high school running camp for girls in Boulder. The camp was a great success, focusing on empowering participants to discover their potential through the sport of running.
Melody met Terry Chiplin at Fleet Feet Sports, Boulder, where Melody works, in October 2007. It soon became clear that Active at Altitude, and its location close to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, could provide the perfect venue for the next step in the development of Melody Fairchild Running Camps. |
“I am delighted to have discovered Active at Altitude and to have an opportunity to work with owners Terry and Jacqui. The location of their center, with trail access galore and proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park, is ideal for developing the strength and conditioning necessary for successful distance running and the inspiration of the surrounding wilderness is just what runners need, to transcend perceived limitations and discover uncharted territory within. The center itself will provide our runners with the nurturing environment helpful for integrating the self-discoveries made out on the trails. Anyone who is choosing, purposefully, to embrace the gifts to body and spirit that connection to our selves through movement within our natural environment gives, will find their stay at Active at Altitude the most lovely affirmation of this choice imaginable.”
Terry adds: “We are delighted to have been chosen by Melody as the location for her 2008 summer training camp. Melody’s holistic approach to running training fits perfectly with our own philosophy of empowering individuals to achieve their own unique potential. We look forward to providing an environment that enables the high school girls attending to truly discover their own potential in this beautiful location. Estes Park has so much to offer, from 7,500 feet of elevation to mountain trails almost on your doorstep. This is a paradise for training at altitude. We see this camp with Melody as another step towards having Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park recognised as one of the best altitude training destinations for endurance athletes not only from Colorado and the USA, but all over the World.” |
